To Whom it May Concern,

I am a certified TEFL teacher and English major seeking a teaching job in South Korea. I’m looking to pursue a career of teaching English across the globe. Part of what I love about teaching is that it gives me the ability to put my creative side to a real use in the classroom by inventing interesting and involved lesson plans that can include anything from visual art, musically oriented lessons, interesting word games and physical lessons that get the students up and moving. Both the history and culture of South Korea fascinate me and I feel that in this day and age it is an important thing to try to understand not only Korean, but Eastern culture in general.

I have spent the past two years teaching swim lessons to mostly children, but occasionally adults as well. During my time as a swim instructor I learned how to manage a class effectively. As I’m used to working in a pool environment with energetic children, I am also particularly good at teaching misbehaving or inattentive students. As part of my recent TEFL certification I spent time working as an ESL student teacher in my school district. During this time I learned the ins and outs of running an English language class. I prepared lesson plans for intermediate and beginner adults and I also learned how to run a class with both my own and textbook materials. My greatest asset as a teacher is my energy. I love working with kids partly because I am able to match their enthusiasm and have a great time while I do it. No matter how rough a class has been, at the end of a day of teaching I always feel like I accomplished something to be proud of. Aside from my teaching skills I am also a lifeguard licensed in first aid, a musician, a poet and a juggler.

The first time I ever went abroad it was to study English. I spent three months living in London studying British literature and theatre. It was partly the time I spent immersing myself in the English language while living in another country that made me sure of my desire to teach English overseas. However, my love for education and the English language began far before I let for England. I come from a family of English teachers. My mother teaches high school English, my father is an English professor, my uncle was an English teacher and now writes and preforms children’s poetry. Even my grandmother was a teacher, although it was the French language she preferred. My love for teaching English is something that is innate.

Throughout my life I have also experienced a wealth of challenges, such as a thirty-day survival and leadership class I took while living in the Olympic mountain range. Over the years I have learned how to adapt to new and uncomfortable situations partly because I have been in so many of them. I’m particularly interested in teaching in South Korea because it seems like the perfect place to begin a career of teaching English abroad. I have taught swimming lessons to children since I was in highschool. I was also an English literacy tutor in college and I spent 20 hours student teaching ESL classes for my TEFL certification.
