My name is Erin Hamilton and I am interested in the position of English instructor in Korea. I was excited to see such an amazing opportunity present itself at what I feel could be the most rewarding next step in my young life. I am confident that the skills and accomplishments I have obtained through my bachelor’s degree as well as my time spent in both a team focused and leadership focused atmosphere in a variety of programs, would make me the perfect candidate with the very best qualifications for this opportunity.
I am a San Francisco State University Alumni where I obtained a degree in Kinesiology, with an emphasis in Gerontology. I obtained this degree with the goal of becoming an activities coordinator and health instructor in assisted living facilities for older adults. While attending University I spent a great deal of time outside of school working both as a volunteer and as a paid employee.I was employed by Peet’s Coffee & Tea for two years where I received management training and experience.I also learned through this customer service experience the importance of professionalism amongst the employees considering the employees represent the employer and the employer’s image.I volunteered at the local YMCA in San Francisco where I coordinated and instructed activity courses for older adults with arthritis.I spent four hours a week preparing courses, four hours a week in front of a class, and several hours a month participating in other courses in order to learn from other instructors. While in school I completed a course in public speaking where I obtained many hours of practice speaking in front of a class. With the experience I gained as a volunteer, as well as with the skills I perfected at State, I have become accustomed to holding my place in front of a classroom.
I am about to complete a year of English language teaching at a private academy in Incheon.I was this academy’s first and only foreign teacher and I successfully created lesson plans and orchestrated classes of up to twelve elementary and middle school students with minimal guidance.I taught the students core vocabulary and grammar rules as well as conversation skills that they had never been able to practice before.I maintained a warm and friendly atmosphere in the classroom and developed an excellent rapport with my students.Along with my teaching time I also conducted speaking tests both over the phone and in person, I wrote and graded tests, and I participated in activities hosted by the academy such as Holiday parties and market days. With my experience at this academy I am comfortable in front of a class of ESL students and confident in my abilities to create lesson plans and tests that will heighten their learning experience.
I have a thirst for knowledge of cultures and life and I have taken that curiosity to new levels in a hope to envelope my life in whatthe world is offering. I have traveled to both Southeast Asia and South America and before moving to Korea I completed a six month program in a Conservation Corp that runs out of Montana where we were charting new land to create new trails. The MCC prides itself on its character building and educational atmosphere where I have taken my leadership to new levels.By joining Montana Conservation Corps I took myself out of my comfort zone, worked with many different personalities twenty-four hours a day for up to two weeks at a time, and excelled at a type of labor in which I had no previous experience.Through this I learned that I can adjust to different environments, different people, I can work hard to learn skills I have never used before, and I can have a wonderful time doing so.
On top of my experience in leadership and team building, I have a strong work ethic and take pride in doing a job well.I am punctual, mature, and comfortable making decisions and discussing ideas for growth or change. I take criticism well and use critiques as an opportunity to grow and advance my skills. When I am hired for a job I take it as my own and view my place of employment as something I care about, thus will always work hard not just to improve myself, but to help my place of employment be the best it can be.I am always willing to learn more and advance my education in order to improve my skills for a particular job.I pay attention to detail and can be creative in a job when it is appropriate.
I am ready to begin any training for your program at any time.I have an extremely flexible schedule and would be committed to your program as much as possible. It is my hope that I will be able to take an opportunity such as this and pass on what knowledge I have gained over the years, while hoping at the same time to soak in all South Korea would teach me.
I thank you very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss this opportunity at greater length.
Sincerely,
Erin Hamilton
