Myname is Ally McLeod and I’m very excited about the opportunity to work at yourschool.

I’vehad over two years experience working with Kindergarten and Elementary studentsat hagwons in Seoul. While I don’t have any public school experience I feelmore than ready about making the step to this field, because of the lessonsthat I have learned as a teacher to young learners.

Atmy previous jobs I have been exposed to a wide variety of materials andtextbooks used in my classrooms and I have formed my own opinions on my purposeas a teacher. Technology is always useful in the classroom, but I feel there isno substitute for a whiteboard and an awful lot of conversation. The simplefact is that teaching is not learning and the more that I speak in theclassroom, the less chance my students have. The thousands of foreign teachersin Korea are, for the most part, conversation instructors. While I adorewriting classes and feel the greatest excitement to read good writing from mystudents, I understand that my focus needs to be on demonstrating conversationa little, and listening a lot, correcting and guiding when needed. I’ve taughta wide variety of lessons, from vocabulary and grammar to PE and Cooking, I’veworked on a dozen different field trips and rehearsed monthly and annual shows,all for the purpose of helping my students practice their English outside inthe real world and express themselves in the ways they want and need. I’velearnt from my own efforts at studying Korean that a language student learnsbest and quickest when they have no choice but to speak the language. Creatingan environment of both fun and English immersion in the classroom, with as alittle as Korean as possible (even from the co-teacher), means that studentshave to use English, and might actually want to, too!

Atthe elementary age I feel that students just don’t work well with the idea ofhard work for work’s sake or the abstract learning by rote of vocabulary andgrammar. Every class needs creative application; whether through conversation,group writing or classes like arts, science, PE or even cooking, young learnersneed to be able to see a reward beyond a good grade. They need to have fun withEnglish. Not all the time, but enough to remind them why they should work hard.Working with such young students I always try to emphasise the link betweenhard work and reward. Every class needs to have a focus and an end goal: if wedon’t reach that goal then we don’t have the chance for a purposeful-but-easyfun time; if we get there early, then there’s more time for activities andgames.

Ilove my job and I gain great satisfaction from both my students’ growth andprogress and mine. Teaching young learners requires a lot of energy, but itgives an awful lot back, too. I would say that my greatest strength as ateacher is the rapport that I’m able to quickly acquire with most of myclasses. I think that I can maintain the right mix of discipline and energy inthe classroom and, while I haven’t previously worked with class numbers ofpublic school size, I’m looking forward to the challenge.
